Urology Meds
The following medications may be prescribed by urologists for the treatment of urological symptoms and diseases. The descriptions and associated linked information are intended for personal reference only. This is not intended to replace the advice and instruction of your physician. Please note that many drugs listed here are used to treat multiple symptoms, diseases or disorders. These drugs are not necessarily for the exclusive treatment of urological symptoms and diseases.
Analgesic, urinary
- Pyridium (Phenazopyridine (fen-az-oh-PEER-i-deen)) is used to relieve the pain, burning, and discomfort caused by infection or irritation of the urinary tract. It is not an antibiotic and will not cure the infection itself.
- Pyridium Plus (Phenazopyridine (fen-az-oh-PEER-i-deen)), a combination product containing Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride, Butabarbital, and Hyoscyamine Hydrobromide, relieves urinary tract pain, burning, irritation, and discomfort, as well as urgent and frequent urination caused by urinary tract infections, surgery, injury, or examination procedures. However, phenazopyridine is not an antibiotic; it does not cure infections.
Androgen
Androgens (AN-droe-jens) are male hormones. Some androgens are naturally produced in the body and are necessary for the normal sexual development of males.
- Androderm (Testosterone (tes-TOS-te-rone)) is used to replace the hormone when the body is unable to produce enough on its own.
- Androgel (Testosterone (tes-TOS-te-rone)) is used to replace the hormone when the body is unable to produce enough on its own.
- Depo-Testosterone (Testosterone (tes-TOS-te-rone)) is used to replace the hormone when the body is unable to produce enough on its own.
- Testoderm (Testosterone (tes-TOS-te-rone)) is used to replace the hormone when the body is unable to produce enough on its own.
Antibacterial
A class of medicines known as antibiotics. It is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body.
- Bactrim (Co-trimoxazole Oral (coe try mox' a zole)), a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, a sulfa drug. It eliminates bacteria that cause various infections, including infections of the urinary tract.
- Cipro (Ciprofloxacin (sip-roe-FLOX-a-sin)) is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria.
- Cipro XR (Ciprofloxacin (sip-roe-FLOX-a-sin)) is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria.
- Levaquin (Levofloxacin (lee-voe-FLOX-a-sin)) is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body.
- Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin (nye troe fyoor an' toyn)) eliminates bacteria that cause urinary tract infections.
- Septra (Co-trimoxazole Oral (coe try mox' a zole)), a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, a sulfa drug. It eliminates bacteria that cause various infections, including infections of the urinary tract.
- Trimpex (Trimethoprim (trye-METH-oh-prim)) is used to treat infections of the urinary tract.
Anticholinergic
A group of medicines used to relieve cramps or spasms of the bladder.
- Cystospaz (Hyoscyamine (hye-oh-SYE-a-meen)) is used in the treatment of bladder spasms.
- Levbid (Hyoscyamine (hye-oh-SYE-a-meen)) is used in the treatment of bladder spasms.
Anticholinergic-antibacterial-analgesic, urinary tract
- Prosed/DS (Atropine (A-troe-peen) , hyoscyamine (hye-oh-SYE-a-meen) , methenamine (meth-EN-a-meen) , methylene (METH-i-leen) blue, phenyl salicylate (FEN-ill sa-LI-si-late) , and benzoic acid (ben-ZOE-ik AS-id) is a combination medicine that helps relieve the discomfort caused by urinary tract infections; however, it will not cure the infection itself.
- Urised (Atropine (A-troe-peen) , hyoscyamine (hye-oh-SYE-a-meen) , methenamine (meth-EN-a-meen) , methylene (METH-i-leen) blue, phenyl salicylate (FEN-ill sa-LI-si-late) , and benzoic acid (ben-ZOE-ik AS-id) is a combination medicine that helps relieve the discomfort caused by urinary tract infections; however, it will not cure the infection itself.
Anti-enuretic
- Elavil (Amitriptyline (a-mee-TRIP-ti-leen)) is used to treat enuresis (bedwetting) in children.
- Tofranil (Imipramine (im-IP-ra-meen)) is used to treat enuresis (bedwetting) in children.
Anti-inflammatory, local (interstitial cystitis)
- Elmiron (Pentosan (PEN-toe-san)) is used to relieve the symptoms of the bladder condition called interstitial cystitis.
Antineoplastic
A group of drugs that decreases testosterone levels. Reducing the amount of testosterone in the body is one way of treating cancer of the prostate.
- Eligard (Leuprolide (loo-PROE-lide)) may be used for treatment of cancer of the prostate gland in men.
- Lupron (Leuprolide (loo-PROE-lide)) may be used for treatment of cancer of the prostate gland in men.
- Trelstar (Triptorelin ( TRIP-toe-rel-in)) may be used for treatment of cancer of the prostate gland in men.
Antispasmodics
A group of medicines that help decrease muscle spasms of the bladder and the frequent urge to urinate caused by these spasms.
- Detrol (Tolterodine (TOLE-tear-oh-deen)) is used to treat bladder problems such as frequent need to urinate or loss of control of urinary function.
- Detrol LA (Tolterodine (TOLE-tear-oh-deen)) is used to treat bladder problems such as frequent need to urinate or loss of control of urinary function.
- Ditropan (Oxybutynin (ox-i-BYOO-ti-nin)) helps decrease muscle spasms of the bladder and the frequent urge to urinate caused by these spasms.
- Ditropan XL (Oxybutynin (ox-i-BYOO-ti-nin)) helps decrease muscle spasms of the bladder and the frequent urge to urinate caused by these spasms.
- Enablex (Darifenacin (dar-i-FEN-a-cin)) is used to treat bladder problems such as frequent need to urinate or loss of control of urinary function.
- Sanctura (Trospium (TROSE-pee-um)) is used to treat bladder problems such as frequent need to urinate or loss of control of urinary function.
- Vesicare (Solifenacin (sol-i- FEN-a-cin )) Used to treat bladder problems such as frequent need to urinate or loss of control of urinary function.
Benign prostatic hypertrophy therapy agents
A group of medicines used to treat the signs and symptoms of benign enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH).
- Avodart (Dutasteride (doo tas' teer ide)) works by blocking the production of a natural substance that enlarges the prostate. This shrinks the prostate and relieves the symptoms of BPH.
- Cardura (Doxazosin ( dox-AY-zoe-sin)) helps relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening of the bladder. This may help increase the flow of urine and/or decrease the symptoms of BPH.
- Cardura XL ((Doxazosin ( dox-AY-zoe-sin)) helps relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening of the bladder. This may help increase the flow of urine and/or decrease the symptoms of BPH.
- Flomax (Tamsulosin (tam-SOO-loh-sin)) helps relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening of the bladder. This may help increase the flow of urine and/or decrease the symptoms of BPH.
- Hytrin (Terazosin ( ter-AY-zoe-sin)) helps relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening of the bladder. This may help increase the flow of urine and/or decrease the symptoms of BPH.
- Proscar (Finasteride (fin-AS-tur-ide)) blocks an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, which is necessary to change testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow. As a result, the size of the prostate is decreased while taking Proscar.
- Uroxatral (Alfuzosin (al-FYOO-zoe-sin)) helps relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening of the bladder. This may help increase the flow of urine and/or decrease the symptoms of BPH.
Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence) therapy agents
A group of medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction in men by increasing blood flow to the penis or helping to maintain an erection.
- Caverject (Alprostadil (al pros' ta dil)) is used to produce a sexually functional erection in males with impotence (erectile dysfunction).
- Cialis (Tadalafil (tah-DAL-a-fil )) is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
- Levitra (Vardenafil (var-DEN-a-fil )) is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
- Viagra (Sildenafil ( sil-DEN-a-fil)) is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
Immunobiologics
An antigenic or antibody-containing preparation used for immunization and immune therapy.
- TheraCys® BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) Vaccine (ba sil' us kal' met gay rayn')) is used to treat bladder tumors or bladder cancer.
Urinary Alkalinizing Agent
- Urocit-K (Potassium Citrate) Work by neutralizing some of the acid in the urine, which helps reduce the formation of crystals.
